Residents across Camden will be pitching in to clean up their neighbourhoods as part of the country's biggest ever litter tidy up. Camden Council is supporting The Big Tidy Up campaign, which is being run by Keep Britain Tidy for the whole of September. The aim is to encourage as many people as possible to take part in local clean up events to cut down on litter and improve the environment. Camden Council already works hard all year to tidy up and clean up the borough. But,even more can be achieved by everyone working together. * Camden remains one of the cleanest boroughs in London as verified by independent environmental charity ENCAMS * In 2007/08 Camden spent approximately £10,000,000 on street sweeping, street cleansing and clearing fly-tips * In 2007/08 Camden collected around 10 thousand tonnes of litter and dumped waste from Camden's streets Richard Bradbury, Camden Council's Senior Policy & Projects Officer of Street Environment Services, said: "We hope to see as many people as possible doing their bit by joining friends and neighbours in the Big Tidy Up. It doesn't matter how small the area, as tidying up even a small corner of the neighbourhood can make a huge difference to the local community." While the Big Tidy Up Campaign is focussed on September Camden Council is also committed to supporting residents who want to carry out clean-ups throughout the year. The Council organises smoking related litter campaigns in areas highlighted by Camden residents, businesses and Camden staff. Council staff also volunteer their time to help out with clean-up campaigns such as The Big Tidy Up, Capital Clean Up and Estate Action Days. Camden Council is supporting residents who want to take part in the Big Tidy up by advertising the campaign across the borough, publicising some of the local clean-up events and offering assistance as part of clean up events when contacted in advance. People can take part in the Big Tidy Up either as individuals wanting to tidy a local spot or as part of a larger group, such as a school, faith group, or business. Clean-up materials are available through the campaign website, http://www.thebigtidyup.org/, supplied by Keep Britain Tidy when groups register with the campaign. http://www.camden.gov.uk/ |
