New figures released today show that over the last five years Camden Council has seen an 82 per cent drop in the number of abandoned vehicles being removed and destroyed. In 2002/2003 Camden Council had to clear up a total of 1676 abandoned vehicles in the borough, but last year (2007/2008)this fell to just 306. A combination of tougher enforcement, new rules deterring would-be car dumpers and high scrap metal prices have all led to a massive drop in the number of wrecks being left on streets. Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, said: "We are taking a proactive approach to improving the quality of the local environment and public spaces in Camden. Dumping cars is an illegal, anti-social activity that creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to people's fear of crime. We have now begun to win the battle against unsightly old cars being left in our streets. This is down to a combination of cracking down on would be dumpers and quicker clearing up by Council." Anyone can report an abandoned vehicle by calling the Council's street management team on 020 7974 6914 or online at http://www.camden.gov.uk/. http://www.camden.gov.uk/ |
