Camden Council introduces food waste collection A weekly food waste collection is being piloted in Camden to make the borough greener. The improved waste collections mean that some households in Hampstead, Frognal and Fitzjohns, Gospel Oak and Belsize will now have a free weekly food and garden waste collection. This is in addition to their existing one refuse and two recycling collections per week. This also means residents taking part in this one-year trial won't have to pre-book garden waste collection. Those taking part have already had delivered a kitchen caddy for storage inside, compostable caddy liners and where possible a choice of outside container. Once collected the food and garden waste will be taken to a north London facility for composting. The high quality compost produced can be used in agriculture, parks and gardens. Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council, said: "We hope this new opportunity for residents to recycle their food waste will help to encourage them to do it more and cut the amount we are sending to landfill. "This will help the environment as well as meaning Camden taxpayers don't have to pay as much in landfill duties." The Council will be looking at the success of the pilot in making decisions about future waste collections.
Residents in Camden already recycle 28 per cent of their waste - Camden is in the top 10 of London boroughs for recycling performance and in the top five for dry recyclables. As part of its commitment to the environment the Council wants to reduce the amount of household waste going to landfill by a further 20 per cent by 2012. http://www.camden.gov.uk/ |
