Historic Hampstead landmark set for a facelift - 25-07-2008

A consultation is being launched today, on proposals which could see Hampstead's historic Whitestone Pond transformed into an inviting meeting place, in time for the Olympics.

Improved walkways, new lighting and better landscaping are just some of the proposals put forward for the pond which aim to enhance the current facilities and features and make the area more enjoyable for visitors.

 The plans for Whitestone Pond have been put together by the London Borough of Camden in partnership with the City of London, who are responsible for the pond itself, Transport for London and the Heath and Hampstead Society.

 The pond is the pedestrian hub between the West Heath and Hampstead Heath, as well as the main gateway into Hampstead village and proposed improvement works include:

- New planting and grass areas introduced around the pond, with the aim of creating a visual link between the heath, the pond and Whitestone walk;

- Improved pedestrian access;

- Improvements to existing seating to allow visitors greater views of the pond and heath;

- The introduction of new heritage style lighting columns, and

- Yorkstone paving introduced to the area surrounding the pond.

Cllr Mike Greene, Camden Council's Executive Member for Environment, said:

"Whitestone Pond has the potential to become a popular social space again, and with the road cycling events of the 2012 Olympics passing this point, this is the perfect opportunity to see the area transformed into a space that everyone can enjoy.

I really hope residents will take the opportunity to tell us what they think of these proposals and help us create somewhere we can all be proud of."

The consultation runs from 18 July until 10 September and all responses will be taken into account in the report to Camden's Councillors due to be presented to the Environment Executive Sub-Group towards the end of 2008.
