There’s no excuse to be bored this summer! - 18-07-2008

Young people and families in Camden are set for a summer of fun with Camden Council's exciting programmes of activities which run from 24 July to 29 August.

The annual Camden Summer University programme for 13 to 19 year-olds has just been published, together with a separate guide to holiday schemes for children aged four to 16.

Among the courses this year are film-making, script writing, music masterclass with jazz star Soweto Kinch, fashion design, Chinese calligraphy and Japanese manga, motorcycle skills, street dance and urban poetry. Some skills will even be eligible for accreditation.

Esther Sobogun, 16, who took part in the journalism and photography courses last year, said:

"I really enjoyed learning new things - I had never done digital photography before. During the journalism course we visited a local newspaper office and talked to the editor about how the different sections are produced."

A student at Hampstead School, Esther will help other local young people to make the most of this year's Camden Summer University, by acting as a volunteer ‘peer motivator'.

There will be lots more over the summer weeks. A free play day event will take place at Coram's Fields, and there will also be free sports sessions.

Cllr Janet Grauberg, Camden Council's Executive Member for Children, said:

"The number of activities, courses and events on offer this year is incredible. We listened to many young people and children who attended last year, and have introduced lots of new and exciting events as a result. There will be something for everyone and I'd urge all young people and families to enjoy what's on offer!"

To find out more, visit the new area of the Council's website for young people, Camden Activity Zone (www.camden.gov.uk/caz). Just launched, CAZ provides lots of information and even a competition with some great prizes.

Last year more than 700 young people attended Camden Summer University's range of arts, media, sport, personal development and career-related courses.
