A major consultation is being launched this week across north London to establish residents' views on waste management and the environment. The six week consultation will be seeking input on issues ranging from the types of facilities that should be used to treat the 1million tonnes, and growing, of north London's waste through to environmental impacts such as climate change and air quality. The North London Joint Waste Strategy, developed by the seven north London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Islington, Hackney, Haringey and Waltham Forest and the NLWA, sets out the framework for meeting the challenge of managing waste in north London up to 2020. However before the strategy is formally adopted and implemented by the authorities residents are being given the opportunity to have their say. Andrew Lappage, Head of Waste Strategy for the North London Waste Authority, explains: "The financial and environmental impacts of continuing to operate as we have in the past are not sustainable and we need to find an alternative to landfill - a long-term cost effective solution for managing our waste. "This consultation forms part of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) which identifies and assesses the likely environmental impacts of the draft North London Joint Waste Strategy and makes recommendations for changes to reduce them. "The results of the SEA consultation will be taken into account in developing the final North London Joint Waste Strategy." Cllr. Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said: "Many people don't think about their rubbish past putting it in the bin but the way in which waste is managed can impact on our lives in a number of ways from human health (includes noise, odour and air quality) and the local economy (by creating new jobs) through to climate change. "This consultation is important because it allows Camden residents to get involved and tell us whether we are getting our proposed approach for managing waste right. I would encourage everyone to take part whilst they can." The consultation is open until the start of June.
