CAMDEN Council has this week (6 May, 2008) launched the next stage of its consultation into the future of its care homes in the borough. Cllr Martin Davies, Camden Council's Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, will be discussing with care home residents and their families four options regarding who should own and run the care homes in the future. The council is working to improve and increase suitable services and accommodation for older people in the borough, as it predicts growing numbers of people in need of support in years to come. One of the key aims of the Homes for Older People project is to ensure older people have access to good quality accommodation that is appropriate to their needs. This latest consultation forms part of the already agreed plan to open two new care homes in September 2011 and September 2013. The options for the future are: - Council to own and manage the care homes.
- Council to own and oversee the building but someone else to manage the care homes.
- Council to own the buildings but they will be built and managed by a partner organisation.
- Council to sell all sites to a private organisation for them to construct the new buildings and provide the care.
A number of meetings will be held at the care homes and staff, residents and families will be invited to share their views on the options. The council has already consulted on plans for rebuilding two new care homes, developing more extra care sheltered housing and rebuilding the Charlie Ratchford Resource Centre (1). It aims to meet both current and future aspirations for independence and dignity by: - Helping people remain living independently for longer within their own home - close to friends, family and support.
- £30 million investment into council care homes and the Charlie Ratchford Resource Centre.
- Creation of two new care homes which provide a good environment for residents that offers both personal care and nursing care (2).
- Extensive development of extra care sheltered housing across the borough.
Cllr Martin Davies, Camden Council's Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: "This provides a great opportunity for residents to continue to be involved in the development of brand new facilities for older people that are purpose built and better meet their needs. "This is a major and exciting project in which the council is investing £30million. We are very keen to hear people's views about how this should be done, building on what residents told us last year, and to continue to involve residents throughout the project." The results of the consultation will be presented to the council's Executive on 23 July 2008 when a decision will be made on the best option. http://www.camden.gov.uk |
