CAMDEN residents and council staff are joining forces over the next two months to get stuck in and help make their estates nicer and brighter. A number of pilot estate action days are taking place in May and June when improvements and repairs will be made to five of the council's housing estates. Residents are being encouraged to don their rubber gloves and get stuck in by ‘adopting a pot' to make the communal areas of their estate brighter, planting of new shrubs, and helping remove graffiti. The days also give residents an opportunity to find out more about the work of the council's housing staff, get information about welfare benefits, employment and training initiatives, advise about how to deal with crime and antisocial behaviour, and to get information about fire safety. Residents can also make suggestions as to what other improvements they would like to see carried out on their estate. Action days will take place at the following estates: - 8am to 4pm Tuesday, 13 May - Tolmers Square, Regents Park
- 10am to 3pm Thursday, 15 May - Alexandra and Ainsworth, Kilburn
- 10am to 4pm Thursday, 22 May - St Pancras Way, Cantelowes
- 8am to 3pm Thursday, 29 May - Birkenhead Estate, Kings Cross
• 10am to 3pm Thursday, 5 June - Kiln Place, Gospel Oak Tolmers Square estate will have shrubs cleared, decking scrubbed clean, smoke alarms installed, and in the afternoon children can play on a fire engine and there will be face painting. Alexandra and Ainsworth estate will see jet washing of walls and pavements, graffiti removal, new shrubs planted, improvements to communal grounds and gardens, and repairs to communal fencing. St Pancras Way estate will have graffiti removal, planting of new shrubs in communal areas, and minor repairs across the estate. Birkenhead Estate will have a skip on site during the day for communal use by residents while people from the probation service will help with litter clearance. Kiln Place estate will have general housing repairs carried out, the tenants' and residents' association will be attending to find out what the group can do for residents in the future, and advice will be given on responsible dog ownership. Cllr Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Housing at Camden Council, said: "Estate action days are a great way of bringing the community together, along with all the different council services and its partners, to make their estates brighter and nicer. "I would encourage all residents to take part in these days and help make this pilot project a success so even more residents can benefit from the scheme." Along with council staff and partners, a member of Origin Housing Group - one of the council's primary partners who are helping on a number of key issues in Camden such as youth provision and promoting well-being on our estates - will be attending the days. If the pilot scheme is successful it could be rolled out across the borough.
