A sense of community and inclusion, unique peer mentors and the quality of care students receive were among the qualities which impressed inspectors on a visit to Acland Burghley school. Ofsted rated Acland Burghley as "a school with many good features where students receive a satisfactory education", following an inspection at the school in Burghley Road on 26 and 27 March. Headteacher Michael Shew said: "I'm pleased that the inspectors rated the school as "good" in so many areas - teaching and learning, the curriculum, leadership and management, care, guidance and support, personal development and well being - and identified the core strengths of the school." Inspectors said they were impressed with the effectiveness of the sixth form, which is part of the La Swap consortium, comprising four local secondaries. "Good quality provision is leading to improving standards and students achieve well," the report said. "Students in the sixth form are confident, mature and articulate ambassadors for the school. They attain above average standards in A level examinations." Inspectors found students are proud of their school and behave well. The inspectors were particularly impressed with the school's peer counsellors who successfully help more vulnerable students. The report noted the training and interview processes they go through to undertake this role make a positive contribution to their personal development and help prepare them for the world of work. The report said: "The headteacher has a clear vision of creating a sense of community and inclusion within the school, which he is doing successfully, with the support of the senior team and middle managers." Mr Shew added: "Teachers and staff and the school work extremely hard at Acland Burghley to meet the needs of our pupils. The inspectors were positive about the direction the school is taking and the report is an endorsement of the hard work and commitment of the staff and governors at the school." "I was particularly pleased the inspectors recognised our commitment to community and inclusiveness and saw how well students behave both in lessons and toward each other." Cllr Andrew Mennear, Camden Council's Executive Member for Schools, said: "This result shows Acland Burghley is firmly on the right path. Teachers, support staff, governors and students can rightly be proud of what they have achieved and I wish them every success in building on this foundation." - Ends - Notes to editors Ofsted is the inspectorate for children and learners in England.
