Situated in the Northern part of Orpington, just off the High Street, and in a conservation area, Orpington Priory, together with its Gardens and Museum, is well worth a visit. And it's completely free!
Parts of the Priory date back to the thirteenth century, and it's an excellent example of a medieval Hall House. Eadsy, the chaplain to King Canute, donated the estate on which the original building was erected to Christ Church Priory, Canterbury, and in 1270, Hugh de Mortimer held court there as the first Rector of Orpington.
Twenty years later, the Priory was rebuilt, and subsequent additions and alterations were made in 1393 and 1471. The building was acquired for personal use in the 17th Century, and therefore ceased its designation as a Priory, but after passing into the hands of Orpington Urban District Council, the museum and library can be found inside, including a permanent display of local history.
Other attractions include an exhibition dedicated to Sir John Lubbock, famous for introducing Bank Holiday Mondays, and temporary events and exhibitions take place all year round. In the gardens, described by The Good Gardens Guide as "one of the most tastefully-gardened public spaces in outer London", a natural pond marks the source of the River Cray.
The only fully-accessible Grade 2 building in the Borough of Bromley with free entrance, it is open all year between 10.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, and between 1 April and 1st October, at 1.00pm and 5.00pm on Sundays (Closed 25th and 26th December)
