Deep beneath Chislehurst is a labyrinth of over 20 miles of ancient mines carved by hand over an 8,000 year period. The caves are divided into three main sections: Saxon, Druid and Roman, with each section now connected by joining passages.

The caves were originally mined for flint and chalk and although there are no definitive dates of when the mining activity took place, the mines themselves appear on a charter dated around 1250 and in the records of local churches of 1737. The last recorded mining activity was by a limeburner and flintmaker in the Saxon section around the 1830's.

The caves became a major tourist attraction early in the last century, but during World War I they were commissioned by Woolwich Arsenal for storing ammunitions, and were used as an air raid shelter during World War II, making it the largest air raid shelter outside of Central London.

The caves are a popular location for television and films, and programmes such as "Randall & Hopkirk (deceased)" and more recently the BBC series "Merlin" have been filmed here.

Experienced guides conduct tours around the caves explaining the Saxon, Druid and Roman history, and the tour will include a visit to the Druid Alter, the reputed Haunted Pool, Caves Church and many other points of interest.

The caves are open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday each week and Bank Holidays (except Christmas and New Year). During the school holidays the caves are open every day. There is also a licensed Cafe, Gift Shop and large free car park.
