Learning for free, at the libraries - 11-05-2008

Brighton & Hove libraries are hosting free workshops, talks and taster sessions for Adult Learners' Week (17-23 May).

Councillor David Smith, chairman of the culture, recreation & tourism committee, says: "Whether you're a silver surfer, a budding writer, or fascinated by rare books, there's something for everyone. The sessions offer a way of dipping your toes into a subject, as well as picking up useful information about courses, CVs and how to use the internet."

Highlights at Jubilee Library include:

  • Saturday 17 May. Open University advice session: Interested in doing an Open University course? An opportunity to drop in and discuss your options with Open University staff. 10.30am-1.30pm Upper Floor
  • Monday 19 May. Creative Writing Workshop by Graham Jordan, Friends Centre tutor; explore ideas to get you started with your own creative writing. 10am-12 noon, Learning Centre. Call (01273) 294071 to reserve a place (12 people maximum)
  • Tuesday 20 May. CV Preparation Workshops: Next Step Careers Advice Service provide helpful guidance on how to prepare curriculum vitae content and layout.10.30-11.45am or 2-3.15pm, Learning Centre. Call (01273) 294071 to reserve a place
  • Wednesday, 21 May. An Introduction to Jubilee Library's rare books; includes a tour of the rare books store, with a chance to view some of the highlights in the collection. 2.30-3.30pm, Tony Miller Rare Books Reading Room. Call (01273) 294071 to reserve a place
  • Thursday 22 May. Silver Surfers: One to one (45 minute) taster sessions for the over 50s on using the internet and email. 10am-5pm, IT Centre. Call (01273) 296961 to reserve a place
  • Friday 23 May. The heritage of Sussex, by local author Michael Smith. 11am-12.30pm, Learning Centre. Call (01273) 294071 to reserve a place

Patcham Library also hosts 'Family History on the Internet' - your chance to find your ancestors online, with the help of local history author and genealogist Jacqueline Pollard. Tuesday 20 May, 10am-12 noon. Call (01273) 296912 to reserve a place.
