The Brighton Festival 2008 kicked off in style this weekend with the traditional opening celebrations brought to you by the children of Brighton and Hove and surrounding areas. Around 70 schools took part in the Children's Parade, which snaked its way through the streets of Brighton and onto the seafront on a glorious May Day. The parade started in Sydney Street and finished at Madeira Drive. It was based on the theme of Children's Games and many old & new favourites were in evidence from Scrabble and Monopoly to Buckaroo and Pop Up Pirates. Schoolchildren from all over the City dressed in brightly coloured costumes paraded through Brighton's narrow streets and out onto the wide expanse of the seafront dancing and singing as they went. Thousands of spectators lined the route throughout adding to the carnival atmosphere pervading the town. The procession eventually came to an end after over two hours marching through the streets with some very tired but happy children excitedly discussing the day's events and looking forward to next year's. The Brighton Festival 2008 is now truly underway. See the Brighton Festival Website for Full Programme Details.
