Thetford Town

Thetford town is becoming more popular and I believe that Thetford Forest has given a large contribution to this, after all Thetford Forest the largest wood pine forest with many values, not only will you find priceless beauty and tranquil settings for picnics and walks, the forest offers a tea room, adventure playground, mazes and much more.  This forest has brought many people from around the country to Thetford, becoming very popular for holding large events including concerts, these forest has staged big names such as James Morrison with his soulful, bluesy pop sound undoubtedly another sell out following his debut concert here in 2007, Simply Red, the fantastic 80s band Human League and many, many more. However, we must not forget the history Thetford Town offers, it staged many of the best known scenes for the classic t.v. hit sitcom Dads Army, the museum at The Old Fire Station revisits the story of this legendary BBC comedy and its links with Thetford.  Click on Dads Army Museum for more information.

Thetford Priory a Cluniac Priory.  This being one of the most important East Anglian monasteries, founded in 1103 and dedicated to Our Lady. It owes much of its success to the appearance of  Virgin Mary.  Its ruins are an English Heritage site and is open to the general public. The ruins have a reputation for being haunted and was a subject to the series Ghosthunters, the Bell Inn also with a reputation for being haunted in Thetford, also featured in the series.  Many more unexplained phenomena have been reported over the years by paranormal investigation groups.  For more information click on Thetford Priory. 

Thetford has its own football club, Thetford FC, the club is believed to be the oldest football club founded in 1883. The Town have won the Norfolk Senior Cup on two ocassions in 1947/48 and 1990/91 seasons.

Thetford also holds its own markets twice a week, whilst they may only be small markets they are very popular with the locals and tourists, the markets take place on a Tuesday and Saturday, mainly selling fruit and vegetables.

With its many street cafes, bars restaurants and the tranquil river ouse there are many things to enjoy and explore in this ancient and historic town.
