Basingstoke Sterile Services staff win national award in Health and Social Care Awards for the category: Innovative Health and Social Care Technology The Decontamination Unit at Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust last night won the national technology award for the health and social care awards. The team is lead by John Harrison, Sterile Services Manager, who retires this month after over 50 years in healthcare services. The decontamination unit, based in theatres, have made it their focus to reduce the potential for transmission of Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and other similar diseases - an objective that provides continuous changing challenges and greatly impacts the success of patient care and infection control. Chief Executive, Mary Edwards, said, "We are delighted that this project has been given national recognition for best practice. This is an outstanding achievement for both John Harrison and the whole department. John and his team have worked untiringly at improving the quality of their service to both patients and staff. In April this year John was one of 26 finalists from 2,500 applications for the regional awards before having the opportunity to be put forward to a national judging panel chaired by David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive." |
