The Healthcare Commission has today published the results of the most recent national inpatient survey. This is the fifth annual survey of its kind. In October and November 2007, 850 randomly selected patients that had been inpatients were sent a survey, asking for their views on the care they received. The patients selected were all discharged from hospital in August 2007. 512 questionnaires were returned giving a higher than average response rate of 61.2%. The survey includes over 80 questions covering patients' experiences for both planned admissions and emergency admissions equally, and for both male and female adult admissions. Overall Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust did very well. Areas where the Foundation Trust scored significantly well include: - Emergency Department: good levels of information about condition or treatment given
- Emergency Department: good levels of privacy when being examined or treated
- Emergency Department: good waiting times, within 4 hours for admission to bed on a ward
- Admission: limited wait to get room/ward/bed
- Hospital: room or ward clean
- Hospital: food was good and healthy food options on hospital menu
- Care: appropriate amount of information given on condition or treatment
- Discharge: was not delayed
Patient comments included "within 10 minutes of seeing the consultant the next day I was admitted and had an operation planned for that afternoon. Admission pre-op and immediately post-op care was absolutely brilliant and a shining example of the NHS working at its best." Chief Executive, Mary Edwards, said, "I am particularly delighted that we were rated above average in the broad aspects of patient care including communication and cleanliness. This is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff. We will be looking at the detail of these results to ensure we learn from this very important patient feedback and see where we can make further improvements." There were 3 areas that the Foundation Trust will be looking to improve including: - Surgery: risks and benefits not fully explained
- Discharge: did not receive copies of letters sent between hospital doctors and GP
- Overall: not given enough information on how to complain
The annual national inpatient survey forms part of the Healthcare Commission annual health check. The inpatient national survey will be repeated again this autumn. www.northhampshire.nhs.uk |
