Different Types of Franchise Agreements

Franchising is a possibility open to those who wish to begin their own business but do not have any particularly firm idea as to what that business should be. Franchising simply means that you adopt a business idea that has already been thought through. With most franchises you get a lot of initial training and then support whilst you grow your business. The operators of the franchise will also give you advice, help and support when you need it most.

A franchise could be ideal for you if you like the idea of starting your own business but are unsure as to what to do and how to get started. If you buy the right franchise, then you will have a much greater chance of succeeding in your new enterprise. That being said, operating a franchise is not always smooth sailing and exactly the same level of commitment and hard work will apply, just the same as it would if the business were entirely your own idea.

Before you begin to consider whether franchising would be right for you, it is important to understand that there are in fact several different types of franchise agreements. The most common and widely known is the one described above, which sees the franchisee (i.e. you) operate under the strict guidelines of the established franchisor. Examples of this type of franchise can be seen in all the various McDonald's and Subway outlets.

Other kinds of franchise agreements can be quite different, however, including becoming a licensee (whereby you have a licence to make and sell the licensor's products, usually with no franchise-type restrictions on how you operate your own business); becoming an agency (where you effectively market and distribute the licensor's goods or services, earning commissions on sales that you have either made yourself or by other distributors that you yourself have recruited - it is well to check out carefully such business arrangements as these, as some could actually be of an illegal nature); or becoming a dealership distributorship, where you are allowed to trade with the licensor's products but do not carry out your business under the name of an established franchise.

With these various types of franchising in mind then, should you become a franchiser? That depends entirely on the individual, the skills and abilities that you have, and the nature of the business you wish to own and run. Do you enjoy managing other people? Do you like selling to the public? Or would you prefer to work alone and deal with other people as little as possible? These questions are very important ones to consider in determining what, if any, kind of franchise you decide to start.

If you decide you are interested in owning and operating a franchise, where should you look in order to find one? The franchise exhibitions are a good place to start. You can also find many different types of business opportunities on franchise directories on the internet. Their websites offers contact details on various franchise opportunities (both established and relatively new), as well as offering some basic help and even seminars for prospective franchisees.

Running a franchise is not for everyone, but for those it suits it can be an extremely rewarding and profitable endeavour. Find the right franchise, read and study the franchise agreement carefully, get proper legal and professional advice and if you make the right choice and work hard, you could end up doing really well.
