Shooting Star Children’s Hospice has a purpose-built children’s hospice - Shooting Star House which serves a diverse social, cultural and religious population. Working in collaboration with hospitals, GPs and Social Services, the hospice provides care in a safe and professional environment.

Care

Shooting Star House provides: 
Respite care 
To allow short breaks for the family to spend quality time together. The majority of the care provided is respite, with the average stay between 3-7 days (an average of 15 days per year), per patient 
Outreach services (‘Hospice at Home’) 
To allow care to be given in the home, in surroundings that are familiar to the child or young person 
Day Care 
Wwhere a life-limited child or young person receives care in the hospice on a day only basis 
End of life care 
Where on-going counselling and therapy is provided for bereaved siblings and families
The care that they receive is tailored to the individual needs of the young patient


Facilities

Shooting Star House offers the following facilities:
• 10 children’s bedrooms, 2 of which are en-suite for young people who for various reasons may require more privacy. In addition there are 6 family rooms
• Shared family lounge with roof terrace (‘Topped out’ by Patron of The Shooting Star Children’s Hospice, Sir Cliff Richard, on 21st July 2004.)
• The Hydrotherapy Pool & Spa for therapy and relaxation
• The Music Therapy room, where children can be observed by specially trained therapists
• The Arts & Crafts Room, with magnetic paint for the children to hang their artwork
• The Sensory room, used to stimulate the children’s senses through the use of fibre optics, mirrors, water tubes, lights and different sounds
• The Secret Garden for children looking for adventure
• The Tranquil Suite with its own Peaceful Garden where families can be together after the death of their loved one
• The Sparkle Play Room, including computers donated by Lifelites Masonic Trust and ‘playtime’ tailored to the child’s needs
• ‘Time to reflect’ area for individuals looking for a quiet space to have time for their thoughts
• TV Lounge, in an open plan environment
• Large dining area where children, young people, families and carers can all eat together
• Outdoor play area, with nest swing and specially adapted roundabout for children with disabilities
• The Courtyard Garden, which can be viewed from all bedrooms as the central area of the Shooting Star House grounds
• Fun days out arranged for all the family as part of their respite care


Who Will Benefit?

• The hospice benefits life-limited children and young people in the western half of London and north Surrey
• Within this catchment area, there are approximately 3 million households, with 4 million people and over 1 million children.
• From this population, there is up to 1,500 children and young people who suffer from a life-limited condition who can benefit from the care on offer
• 500 of these need expert palliative care

Age Group

• Shooting Star House admits children and young people from the age of 0 to18.

Costs

The costs of the facilities and care at Shooting Star House are provided free of charge to the families
• £3 million is required each year to maintain the care service provision. That amounts to over £8,000 per day
• As The Shooting Star Children’s Hospice currently receives no long-term statutory government funding, all annual running costs have to be raised from charitable voluntary fundraising and donations
• To provide respite care to the families costs £11,600 per child, per year
• To provide a children’s palliative nurse costs over £2,000 per month
• We spend £1,600 a year on fruit and vegetables
• We spend £15,000 a year maintaining the Hydrotherapy Pool & Spa
