City of York Council is proposing to carry out the biggest overhaul of streetlights since the Victorian era.
The council and AMEY, the streetlights partner, carried out a citywide survey last year to test over 9,000 steel streetlights.
As a result of this survey a programme of works is being proposed, which would see over 1,100 concrete and steel streetlights replaced - around 7 per cent of the total lights stock - that were removed because they were structurally unsafe and posed an immediate risk to the public.
Cllr Dafydd Williams, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods at City of York Council, said: This programme of works is the biggest overhaul of streetlights in York since the Victorian times.
"Some streetlights in York are over forty-years old and over time have become damaged or worn. The lighting columns taken down over the last year were in danger of falling over so had to be removed immediately. In some cases if you leant against them they would have fallen over.
"We're proposing to allocate £1 million in this year's budget to upgrade and replace approximately 1,100 lights as soon as possible, but because a lot of York's street lights are antiques that help to provide York's unique character, it's important that they are replaced right."
A proposed replacement schedule will be available on the council's website shortly at: www.york.gov.uk/streetlights/ and in the coming weeks notification signs will be placed in Ward areas to inform residents of when works will start in April.
