Two suspected burglars have been arrested after police spotted them pushing a lawnmower down a York street.

The suspects, a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth, were seen by officers out on routine patrol, walking along Boroughbridge Road towards the city centre at around 3.20am on Thursday 2 February 2012.

The officers stopped the pair who couldn't account for the lawnmower and they were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

The 17-year-old youth was found to be in possession of a pair of pliers and was further arrested on suspicion of going equipped for theft. He was also arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs.

The suspects remain in police custody as enquiries continue.

Switched on PCSO thwarts TV thieves
A quick-thinking Police Community Support Officer helped detain three burglary suspects after spotting them in possession of a flat-screen television in York.

The PCSO was on patrol in Acomb at around 9pm on Wednesday 1 February 2012 when he saw a 14-year-old youth carrying the TV along Viking Road, in company with an 18-year-old man.

The man ran off leaving the youth holding the TV and he was detained by the PCSO who called for back up.

A short time later the 18-year-old man was found by officers on nearby Ostman Road along with a 39-year-old man, who was in possession of a number of mobile phones.

All three suspects were arrested on suspicion of burglary and they remain in police custody as enquiries continue.

It is believed the TV was stolen during a burglary at a property on Almsford Road.

Two picked up for vacuum cleaner theft
Two men are currently being questioned by police on suspicion of stealing a vacuum cleaner from a supermarket in York.

The men, a 26-year-old and a 28-year-old, were captured on CCTV at the Clifton Moor branch of Tesco selecting a Dyson at around 3.30pm on Monday 30 January 2012 and leaving the store without paying.

They were identified after officers reviewed the footage and were arrested in the early hours of Thursday 2 February 2012.

They remain in police custody as enquires continue.

Chief Inspector Dave Hannan, of York Safer Neighbourhood Command, praised the work of the officers involved in the incidents and urged the public to look out for any unusual behaviour.

He said: "I am pleased that we have a number of suspects in custody thanks to some good police work.

"The vigilance of our officers makes it very difficult for offenders operating in the City of York and I hope this sends a message to criminals that we are watching them.

"I would urge the public to keep an eye out for any unusual or suspicious behaviour in the community and contact the police or Crimestoppers if they have any concerns."
