Council takes the lead locally in National Apprenticeship Week

Council takes the lead locally in National Apprenticeship Week

Following the hugely successful 100 in 100 York Apprenticeship Challenge last summer, many of City of York Council's new apprentices taken on during the Challenge are now approaching the halfway point of their time at the authority.

Tomorrow (Thursday 9 February) they are meeting with the Labour Leader of the council, Councillor James Alexander, and chief executive Kersten England, to review their progress to date, and get the opportunity to meet James and Kersten on an individual basis.

As part of last year's citywide campaign in which 199 apprenticeship places were pledged by 80 employers, almost doubling the original target, the council created 34 apprenticeship places across the authority. Apprentices at the council are now working in a range of areas including procurement, economic development, communications, ICT, libraries, the customer centre, transport planning, and legal services.

So far, 26 of the places have been filled, and interviews have just been held for a further eight places in Business Administration.

The York Apprenticeship Challenge, which ran from June to September 2011, in association with The Press, originally aimed to encourage employers across the city to pledge to recruit 100 new apprentices in a 100-day period. Over 90 per cent of the pledges made have now been converted into apprenticeship starts. Of the pledges made, 70 per cent were for Intermediate Apprenticeships and the rest for Advanced Apprenticeships.
Across the city, the 'top five' areas for pledges were :
Business Admin (49)
Hospitality and Catering (35)
Retail (28)
Science Technicians (24)
Accountancy (10).

City of York Council is very keen to build on the success of its apprenticeship programme in the current year, and will shortly be announcing details of a new scheme to launch later this year.
Councillor Alexander said: "I am delighted that we have been able to take on 34 young people in these very challenging economic times, to learn new skills and make a valuable contribution to the life and work of the authority."

Kersten England said: " One of the big issues facing York is ensuring that our young people get off to the best possible start in their working lives. It's great that the council has been able to provide these apprenticeship places, and these young people are acquiring excellent hands-on experience in their chosen fields, ready to develop their future careers."
