Melton's Too is a large Cafe Bar Bistro in York, specialising in homemade food using regional produce, set in a 17th century building.

We are delighted to have won a reputation for our food but we also have a ground floor bar and snug which is a great place for meeting your friends and enjoying a drink at your leisure.

Michael and Lucy Hjort opened Melton's Restaurant (M1) in 1990 and Melton's Too(MToo) in 2001. The Restaurants have different styles; M1 is a fine dining establishment, MToo is a Cafe Bar Bistro.

Both restaurants in York are known for using local seasonal produce, cooked to order. We're proud to include supplier information on our menus and our staff are informed with further detail.

Michael is the 'hands-on' Chef/Proprietor of both restaurants. He works very closely with the Chefs in both kitchens to influence menus and create recipes.

Michael also has his 'fingers in lots of pies' as he is Managing Director of York Food and Drink Festival as well as a Director of VisitYork. He also can be found in schools and various other establishments doing cookery demonstrations or workshops for children, adults (including the homeless).

Biography

Michael trained with Roux Restaurants, who in the 1980s dominated the restaurant scene. He returned to his native York, in the 1990s, to open Melton's Restaurant with his wife Lucy.

Melton's is a fine dining restaurant serving modern British food and is featured in all the major food guides winning two 'AA' rosettes and has a rating of five in the Good Food Guide. It is renowned for serving high quality food in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. In 2001 Michael and Lucy opened Melton's Too; a Café-Bar Bistro in Walmgate, York.

Since its foundation in 1997, Michael has been one of the principle organisers of the York Food and Drink Festival and is now the Festival's Managing Director. His commitment to this Festival arises out of his enthusiastic support of the local quality food industry.

His enthusiasm to develop the food and drink industry motivated Michael to help establish the 'Awards for Excellence' for the staff in Tourism and Hospitlality. Michael recently became a Director in the new Tourism organisation VisitYork.
