Welcome to Bruce Dobson - Artist

I am a self-taught artist, drawing on over 40 years experience of painting and drawing a wide range of subjects in a variety of media. I have been inspired by my love of travel and adventure, which has included cycling round the world and a 120 mile trek through the Nepal Himalaya.

A move to the Orkney Islands 20 years ago was the catalyst for developing my signature style of painting dramatic seascapes and landscapes in acrylics. I hope that when you look at one of my paintings you will not see merely a view, but be taken on a journey such as a walk over the moors or a stroll on a beach. I want you to be able to almost experience the wind through the woods or the rush of the waterfall, evoking powerful and personal emotions and memories.

In all of my work I aim to capture a scene and the emotion it creates. My ultimate goal is to maintain realism whilst using my own artistic interpretation to capture the best possible aspect and atmosphere. You will see from my profile page on my web site that I am a self-taught Artist, and have been for many years.

I paint with Acrylic paints nowadays because they suit the way I like to work and the effects I want to achieve, though I sometimes use watercolours when I feel the subject is right for that medium.

I really enjoy painting seascapes!  having lived in the northern Isles and walking my old (now late) dog Bill  along many beaches and headlands I spent a lot of time watching the sea in all its varied moods and light - you will see several paintings on my gallery pages of my old Border collie friend.

Pet and animal paintings, drawings in pencil have become a bit of a specialty also, I usually work from photos e-mailed to me by clients, though I often visit clients to take the photographs myself, One commission I got in Orkney was to paint a prize bull! Thankfully the farmer accompanied me on that particular photo-shoot.

I still do quite a lot of pen and ink line drawings of private houses and businesses, something I did a lot of 30, years ago they seem to becoming more fashionable again nowadays, for distinctive personalized stationery. Line drawings do reproduce and print well though, especially reduced in size for adverts, there is clever computer software that does produce a similar result from photographs but the results are poor in comparison.
