David Gest... My Life

WIGAN Casino's legendary status has attracted American concert promoter and TV personality David Gest to the town.

The former "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here" contestant has confirmed he'll perform his musical concert extravaganza "David Gest...My Life" at Robin Park Sports Centre in October.

The concert is one of 30 UK dates featuring the Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards, Russell Thompkins JR and the New Stylistics, soul singer Percy Sledge and many more.

Martin Turner, senior duty manager at the sports centre, said: "David contacted us because he was very conscious of Wigan Casino and the northern soul movement and we're delighted he's bringing his concert to Wigan.

"This is the biggest concert the sports' centre will have held but we believe this is just the beginning."

The play covers the story of Gest's life with comedy and music. It includes more than thirty top five records, all performed by the original artists.

Hit songs include "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" by Jimmy Ruffin, "Me and Mrs Jones" by Billy Paul and "Mr Big Stuff" by Jean Knight. In addition, Gest himself will sing and dance.

Wigan Casino began its weekly soul all-nighters in 1973. By 1976, the club boasted a membership of 100,000 people and two years later was voted the world's number one. It closed in 1981 but there remains a passionate northern soul following in the area.

David said: "I was truly amazed at the reaction and support from the first two shows last January at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall and London's Indigo02. The places were packed and it was an exhilarating experience."
