Light up to deter burglars

Light up to deter burglars

Police in Hartlepool have launched an initiative that will run throughout the dark nights to encourage householders to use lighting as a deterrent to burglars.

The ‘Lights Against Crime' campaign is aimed at when the dark nights start to draw in and there is a seasonal increase in burglaries.

PC Stephen Davies, Crime Prevention Officer at Hartlepool Police, said: "At this time of year we tend to see an increase in number of burglaries linked to the dark nights. Houses are particularly vulnerable from mid-afternoon onwards if burglars can identify unoccupied properties. Taking a few simple precautions can reduce this opportunity for burglars and result in fewer people becoming victims of crime.

"Police and The Safer Hartlepool Partnership will be doing everything to try and prevent burglary but we need householders to play their part to reduce the risk of becoming a victim."

With support from Hartlepool Crime Prevention Panel, discounted energy saving lamps are being offered, fitted with a sensor light which will automatically illuminate a room when light levels drop. These lamps normally retail at £9.99 but will be available for £5.00. The lamps will be easy for people to use and will be an alternative to the plug-in. 100 lamps will be available which give 75Watts of light but use only 15watts of energy and have a 15,000 hour lifespan.

PC Steve Davies Police, Crime Prevention Officer, and Colin Hopkins, Crime Advisor for New Deal for Communities, will be in attendance at Storm Electrical on Whitby Street in Hartlepool between 11am and 12pm on Wednesday 28th October and between 11am and 12pm Friday 30th October when these lamps will be available to purchase at the discounted price along with crime prevention advice.

Tips for deterring burglars:
 - Using sensor lamps will automatically illuminate your home when light levels drop.

 - Plug-in timers that will light up your home if you are not in until after dark will create the impression someone is in.

- Choose rooms that are normally well used such as bedrooms and living rooms. Hallways are not suitable.

- Use lighting externally to deter burglars - low energy dusk to dawn lights are most appropriate and only cost about £7 a year to run.

Burglars do not want to be seen or caught and the use of security lighting is a significant deterrent. If you require any further advice please contact Hartlepool Crime Prevention Officers on 01429 405598 or 01426 855560.
