Whats up Down Under

Start date: 3rd July 2009 until 4th July 2009

WHAT'S UP DOWN UNDER

PEOPLE can discover the constellations of the southern hemisphere without leaving the Borough next month thanks to a series of planetarium shows.

Wynyard Woodland Park Planetarium is holding their annual Stars from Down Under show on Friday, July 3 from 7.30 - 9pm.

Visitors can see what the stars look like in Australia including the constellations of the Southern Cross, the Scorpion and the two Centaurs, all from the comfort of their seats.

Head along to discover the Wonders of the Universe on Friday, July 17 when the planetarium hosts a star show which explores the stars of the night sky from all over the earth, looking at the wonder of our own galaxy as well as those in the rest of the universe.

The show, from 7.30 - 9pm, will inform people about constellations which can be seen in the night sky from across the world, what their names are and the legends behind them; as well as the amazing things that can be seen through telescopes, binoculars or even with your own eyes in those parts of the sky.

Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "With the credit crunch still biting these events are not only a great way for stargazers to see the constellations from other parts of the world but also a great way to discover some of the history and legends surrounding them."

Public star shows last for about 1 ¼ hours and cost £3.50 for adults, £2 for children and concessions and £7 for families of two adults and two children.  They are only suitable for children aged 6 or above and an adult must accompany any child under 16.  Booking is advised in order to guarantee a seat.
