Flower Roads tackles anti-social behaviour

An event to reduce anti-social behaviour in the Flower Roads, Swaythling, is happening this month.

The Youth Festival will take place at the Daisy Dip area from August 25-28.

Featuring live music, bouncy castles and five-a-side football tournaments, the main aim of the event is to engage with youngsters. Representatives from, amongst others, Hampshire Constabulary, U-turn and Southampton City Council will be present to tell youngsters about employment, youth activities and crime prevention.

Jim Cappleman, Chairperson of the Flower Roads Residents & Tenants Association, said: "We are very excited about our Youth Festival, which has come together due to the funding the council has secured for us. We want to show our youngsters we do care about them and to ensure things get better in our estate."

Southampton City Council secured for £10,000 from Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), on behalf of the local resident association to fund the event.

Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour is one of Southampton City Council's biggest priorities. Compared to last year there have been 3,261 less reported incidents of anti-social behaviour in Southampton - a 17% drop.

Councillor Phil Williams, Cabinet Member for Local Services and Community Safety said: "I am very pleased we have been able to support local residents with a great event, engaging with young people in the Flower Roads.

"The £10,000 will also be used to pay for further improvements in Daisy Dip that will ensure that the space gets more of a family and community feel.

"The council, police and the rest of the Safe City Partnership are continuously working together to reduce crime in the city. Our residents are key in making our city safer and I commend anyone who is taking action to address crime."

Members of Flower Roads Residents & Tenants Association have also attended three meetings with the council and the police learning about how to deal with and report anti-social behaviour.

The Daisy dip event will take place during Safer Southampton Week which runs from August 23-27. This week sees the Safe City Partnership coming together at events around the city, raising awareness about staying safe.
