Southampton City Councils' Active Communities team has been supporting the young people of Woolston, create ten new murals for their local play park.
Young people in Woolston have spent the last few months creating ten new murals in an after school project, to help brighten up their local play park, Archery Recreation Ground. The murals designed by the young people depict familiar scenes of Woolston that aim to improve the park scene, and make it more colourful and attractive.
The young people have been working in partnership with Southampton City Council, Southampton Solent University and Hampshire Constabulary to help make their parks more attractive and welcoming. This project was funded by Hampshire Constabulary and is a result of partnership working at its finest.
Councillor Royston Smith says:
"I am pleased we could get the Sheriff along to support this initiative that we have been working with the young people on. This is a great initiative for young people that allow them the opportunity to show case their creative talents, and create an attractive park scene for everyone to enjoy and be proud of."
Ellen aged 14, was one of the young people involved in the initiative and described why it was important that she helped take part in the murals allowing her the opportunity "To give something back to the community". The group of young people as a whole were united in saying "It's brought us closer and it's an enjoyable after school project."
Southampton City Council's Active Communities Team work with community groups and volunteers across Southampton.
The Sherriff, Councillor Cunio, will be unveiling the murals on the July 3rd at 5.30pm where she will be giving a speech and will be cutting the ribbon. So yes, the photo call will be for the grand unveiling.
