Test Valley Specials hold events to mark National Specials Weekend
Members of the Hampshire Special Constabulary working in Test Valley are holding a number of events to mark National Specials Weekend.
Special Constabulary members nationwide will be involved in the weekend, Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7, which has the aim of recruiting more people into this very important and rewarding volunteer role.
Hundreds of men and women from all walks of life have already taken up the challenge and joined the Special Constabulary. We are looking for people with common sense and maturity who can spare a minimum of four hours per week to patrol the streets of their community alongside colleagues from the regular force.
Special Constables assist in the policing of public events, from premier league football matches to the local village fete or carnival. Whatever you do we can promise that you'll get a real sense of pride and achievement by putting something really valuable back into society.
Andover District Officer Bob Cooke said: "This year's event is roads policing related. Special Constables in Test Valley will be working as a team using spotters and conducting roadside stops to identify any driver not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or committing other driving offences.
"We will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices or referring motorists to Driver Awareness Training if they are found to be committing an offence."
Drop in sessions for anyone interested in joining the Special Constabulary are also being held:
* Wednesday, February 10 at Stockbridge and Romsey police stations between 7 and 9pm
* Thursday, February 11 at Andover police station between 7 and 9pm
The National Policing Improvement Agency is responsible for national policy on Specials.
Chief Constable Peter Neyroud, Chief Executive of the NPIA, said: "Specials provide a unique link with the communities they work within. They have a key role to play in neighbourhood policing with the diverse skills and experiences drawn from a life outside the force, as well as within. Specials are often frontline responders, and a key part of this is the contribution that they make is in Roads Policing, emphasising the importance of this event."
