A new state of the art toilet for disabled people will shortly be completed at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex.
This is part of a project by Southampton City Council to support the Changing Places campaign which helps people who cannot use standard toilets. This facility will allow users to enjoy wider access to the Quays and everything it has to offer - and the council is trying to provide as many as possible in public places.
There are currently only 190 of these super-loos across the UK and the council has already installed one at Freemantle Community Centre. Now with one shortly to be completed at the Quays and another earmarked for the WestQuay shopping centre - disabled residents and visitors to the City will benefit.
Councillor Ivan White Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: "The three Changing Places toilets are a significant step towards improving the lives of many of our residents that have a profound disability. These facilities are being placed where they are needed most - at the Community Centre in Freemantle which is used a lot by local residents with disabilities and the other two at prime spots in the city - The Quays and WestQuay.
"We value our residents and visitors with disabilities and we will continue to find ways to help them manage the quality of their lives. This is just one way the council is helping to making the city more accessible to people with disability."
Recent research found that nationally over 230,000 severely disabled people, including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities do not have access to public toilet facilities that meet their needs.
These high quality hygienic toilets are designed for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities but can equally meet the need for people with other serious impairments such as spinal injuries or multiple sclerosis who often need extra facilities to allow them to use the toilets more comfortably. These facilities will enable disabled people to access more of the services that are available to all other residents of Southampton.
