A new drive to increase consumer and money advice for people with learning disabilities is being launched by Hampshire County Council.
‘Making Money Matter' is being launched to coincide with national ‘My Money Week ' (29 June to 5 July).
It's a joint initiative between the County Council's Adults Services and Trading Standards and includes a video and booklet for people with learning disabilities, giving useful hints and tips about looking after money.
My Money Week
Between 29 June and 5 July, 'My Money Week' is bringing schools and their local communities together to learn more about managing money in a practical and relevant way. Hampshire County Council has produced a video and booklet containing consumer advice, tips on managing a budget and how to avoid the pitfalls of debt.
Video
The video features topics such as shopping, handling doorstep salespeople and managing credit cards. Presented by Georgie Palmer, it is a light hearted guide on subjects that consumers can fall foul of. Guidance notes are provided so it can be used as an educational tool within special schools across Hampshire.
Booklet
The booklet covers all of the subjects featured in the video in greater detail and has been designed to assist those supporting people with learning disabilities whilst including concise easy to read summaries for self reference. The booklet also acts as a resource to helpful links and places to go for more information on the issues raised within it.
Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry, said:
"There is always a need for people to manage their money effectively and that need is even more so during a recession. More and more people need learning disability services and it is vital that all sectors of the community in Hampshire have the information available to them to make informed choices where their money is concerned."
Copies of the video, which is in DVD format, and the booklet are available free of charge by contacting Tim Ward of Hampshire County Council Trading Standards by calling 01962 833620, sending an email to tim.ward@hants.gov.uk or writing to: Tim Ward, Hampshire County Council, Montgomery House, Monarch Way, Winchester, Hampshire, SO22 5PW.
