Guildhall Square opens to the public
The newly refurbished and repaved Southampton Guildhall Square opened to the public last night.
Building work is now practically complete and Southampton City Council is gearing up for an official launch of the square in November.
The square is a central piece in the city's emerging Cultural Quarter and is now the perfect setting to attract events, art shows and exhibitions. It now features new benches, lighting and paving. The entire area has been transformed to become more pedestrian friendly.
Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council said:
"I am very proud Southampton's Guildhall Square has reached practical completion and residents can start using this amazing new space.
"I'm confident this square will give residents a lot of pleasure, creating an atmospheric place in the heart of the city - as well as attracting further investment and events to Southampton.
"Guildhall Square has already helped attract millions of pounds of investment to the Cultural Quarter for the Arts Complex and Sea City Museum.
"I am looking forward to celebrating Guildhall Square's completion at the launch event in November."
Minor works are left to be completed around the square ahead of the official launch event held on November 12-13. This event will include a magical and awe-inspiring fire garden with dancing fire sculptures, mysterious fiery engines and cascades of candles by French fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse.
