In advance of the green paper which is expected any time now, Hampshire County Council is profiling its nationally acclaimed work into adult social care at the LGA Annual Conference in Harrogate, from 30 June to 2 July 2009.
'Getting personal' - a lunchtime fringe meeting
'Getting personal: a fair deal for care' is one of the specially chosen lunchtime fringe meetings at the conference which has as its theme 'Big Issues, Local Solutions'.
Hampshire County Council's Director of Adult Social Care, Gill Duncan will be accompanied by three of the Commissioners: Cllr Felicity Hindson - Executive Member for Adult Care, Madeleine Starr - Strategic Projects Manager - Carers UK and Stephen Burke - Chief Executive for Counsel and Care.
The presentation addresses the two 'Big Issues' of the day - namely the future of adult social care, which is a big political concern, and the transformation of care services to give people more independence, choice, power and control over the support services they need. Hampshire County Council's two 'local solutions' have been establishing the Commission of Inquiry (it was the only local authority to take this approach) and The Hampshire Model which is the way services are now starting to be delivered
Shortlisted for two national awards
'Getting Personal' and the work of the Commission of Inquiry also has been shortlisted for two national awards in July.
The Involvement Awards 2009 on 2 July are part of the NHS Centre for Involvement and the award recognises innovative and imaginative method of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in relation to commissioning.
And the same work is a finalist for The Good Communication Awards on 8 July, which recognises the public sector's efforts towards effective communication with its citizens and its workforce.
Sophie's a finalist for Council Worker of the Year
Also on centre stage for Hampshire County Council at the conference will be Hampshire County Council's Community Safety Officer, Sophie Davis who, with only a few days to go until voting stops, is in the running for the national Council Worker of the Year Award. Sophie, 27, was nominated for the award for with Hampshire children and is the only finalist from the South East of England.
Sophie's philosophy is that by educating children about the negative effects of antisocial behaviour at a young age there is less chance they will offend in the future. The County Council funded her to set up a network of Junior Community Teams right across the county and she got the kids litter-picking, car washing and befriending elderly people.
The deadline for voting is midday Thursday 2 July 2009 and the winner will be announced at a gala dinner that evening on the last night of the Local Government Association Annual Conference in Harrogate.
