Hampshire County Council is awarding thousands of pounds to enable more residents to take advantage of vital debt support services during the recession.
Funds For Citizens Advice
An additional one-off sum of £40,000 has been awarded to Citizens Advice Hampshire to help them manage the higher demand for their services. In some instances enquiries have more than doubled and debt now makes up the largest number of enquiries to the organisation, especially mortgage arrears and credit card debt.
The funding builds on the £110,370 grant that the organisation already receives from the County Council and will help to provide additional adviser training for volunteers and create new and larger teams of skilled caseworkers, trained to advise on debt problems.
Councillor Roy Perry
Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry said:
"This support comes at a crucial time when Citizens Advice Hampshire is seeing an ever increasing number of people asking for help to deal with the personal and social consequences of the recession.
"As unemployment continues to rise and people face the prospect of losing their homes, jobs or other financial pressures, it is vital that the organisation is ready to respond.
"The Hampshire Senate is already looking at the ways in which local authorities can help to mitigate the effects of these difficult economic times through closer partnership working, and the provision of this extra funding by the County Council complements this important work."
