Reading StreetGames Volunteer Regional Winner
A 20-year-old Reading man has been named as the first regional winner in the Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Matt Dixon from Tilehurst has been working with the Sport Reading Development Team for 15 months as an area leader for the StreetGames sessions in Kensington Park.
He won the South East round of the regional heat and now goes on to represent the region in the national finals next month, competing against five other young volunteers.
The awards are aimed at recognising the excellent work being carried out across the country by young people looking to make a difference to their community.
Judges looked at factors like attitude, qualifications and skills and at who has had a successful impact on their local community.
Andrew Campbell, another Reading StreetGames volunteer, was also nominated for the South East regional Young Volunteer of the Year Award, which was held in Croydon recently.
Graeme Hoskin, Reading's Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport, said: "Well done to Matt and Andrew. StreetGames has proved to be a big hit and is introducing hundreds of local youngsters to a range of sports they may otherwise not have had access to. We can only run a successful StreetGames with the help of volunteers like Matt and Andrew, so thank you to them and the rest of the team."
The Sport Reading Partnership introduced its StreetGames pilot in 2005 and it was a huge success with more than 500 youngsters taking part. Now StreetGames are held across the borough.
They are aimed at 8-15 year olds in areas of deprivation. The sports include football, cricket, lacrosse and tag rugby. Each sport is delivered in an 8-week session, culminating in a mini festival featuring youngsters from the four different parks so they can compete in a fun, friendly and safe environment.
