Reading Council for Racial Equality to Launch 'Rough Guide'
Reading's minority ethnic population constitutes more than 13% of the borough's population, making Reading the third most ethnically diverse place in South East England, according to the latest publication of the Reading Council for Racial Equality.
It is all the more urgent that this substantial section of Reading's residents participates in public life and in local affairs.
Reading Council for Racial Equality, in collaboration with Uni Network, a regional organisation, has published an easy-to-read booklet, or rough guide, on the Local Area Agreement, the three-year contract between Reading Borough Council and Westminster, which sets out the priorities for Reading for the next three years.
The Reading Rough Guide will be launched on Thursday 18th June at 4 pm, in the Council Chambers, Reading Civic Centre, at a panel discussion attended by Reading Borough Council and voluntary and community organisations.
Councillor Jo Lovelock, Leader of the Council, in launching the guide said: "I am delighted that the Reading Council for Racial Equality has taken this initiative - making the work of the Local Strategic Partnership meaningful to residents is a challenge. It is also important that the views of all sections of the community are taken into account, so finding ways to reach minority ethnic residents is clearly very welcome."
Rajinder Sohpal, director of the Reading Council for Racial Equality and a member of the Local Strategic Partnership, added: "I hope that through a better understanding of how the new local area agreement works, Reading's ethnic minority residents will shape local affairs and influence the Government's plans for Reading."
