'Big Voice in Our Lives' Launched in Reading Next Week

People in Reading with learning disabilities, their carers and families are to celebrate the launch of a new strategy that will give them a bigger voice in how services are run in the future.

On Thursday, June 25th, Reading's Learning Disability Partnership, headed by the borough council, will launch 'A Big Voice in Our Lives' - a document that summarises current and anticipated demand for services and highlights the need to reflect national aspirations to improve services for people with learning disabilities.

To mark the launch, the partnership has organised a celebratory picnic at Prospect Park, Leibenrood Road, Tilehurst, from 10am to 3.30pm.

During the picnic, the Learning Disability Partnership will thank people who have contributed to the draft 'Big Voice in Our Lives' strategy document.

The launch of the five-year strategy follows months of feedback received from people in Reading who have learning disabilities, their families, and people who care for them.

People have been able to comment on the draft strategy document during a series of events on developing and transforming services in Reading, including social care, leisure and housing.

Mike Orton, Lead Councillor for Community Care and Health, said: "Many people have contributed by suggesting ways to assist people with learning disabilities to have a better quality of life, and this is a way of saying thank you and celebrating their help."

Although mainly aimed at adults, the strategy also includes young people in transition from childhood to adulthood.

To find out all about 'A Big Voice in our Lives' and what is going on in Reading for people with learning disabilities, go along to the launch on the 25th June.

There will be lots of information and activities including Sport Reading Development Team's Everybody Active activities and a Reading bus.

There is no need to book, just turn up.

For more information about A Big Voice in Our Lives, call Debra Cole on (0118) 9553742.
