£4.26million bid for new sixth-form block

The Council is set to apply for funding for a new sixth-form block at Highdown School.

On Monday, July 6, the Council's Cabinet will be asked to approve a bid for £4.26million to the Learning and Skills Council.

If the bid is successful, building work could begin in October 2009 and the new block could be completed by April 2011.

Planning permission for the new sixth-form block was granted in May 2009.

Demand for sixth-form places at Highdown has been growing strongly in recent years from 176 applications in 2005 to 286 for September 2009, and is expected to rise to about 350 by September 2013. The new building would provide an extra 150 post-16 places.

The new facilities would also enable Highdown to expand its course offer in areas including, media, business studies, film studies, economics, English and maths.

The extra space will support the school in its plans for the wider curriculum, as it continues to develop as a centre of excellence for post-16 education.

The planned two-storey building is designed to be highly energy-efficient and will feature roof-mounted photovoltaic cells to provide power for lighting, as well as state-of-the art ventilation and insulation.

The exterior appearance and size of the building have been designed to harmonise with the school's new arts block.

Jon Hartley, Lead Councillor for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: "Highdown's sixth form has been a real success story and has established a reputation for excellence. But, if it is to continue to develop and thrive, the school needs better quality accommodation and more teaching space for its sixth form."
