Safer Neighbourhoods officers from Portsmouth Central PC Steve Ryan (28) and PC Mark Gray (42) recently organised and took part in a 100 mile charity cycle ride to raise money for local community groups.
The two PCs who cover the Landport and Portsea beat areas completed the gruelling 16 hour Southdowns Way Challenge on Saturday, June 20. The pair began at Winchester at 6.15am in the pouring rain and finished in total darkness at around 11.15pm in Eastbourne.
The ride followed the route of the Southdowns Way, which is now a designated national park, meaning the majority of the ride was off-road and involved around 100,000 metres of hill climbs.
To make up for their hard work PC Ryan and PC Gray were able to take in picturesque views of farmers fields, wooded and grassed areas, also a very bumpy flint Roman road which they say seemed to go on forever!
PC Mark Gray said: "It was hard work but for a very good cause. We had great support. Two vehicles crewed by our colleague PC Gavin Brechany and family members provided us with water refills, bacon sandwiches and tea, they even managed to find us some doughnuts!
"The only problems that were encountered on route were a broken pedal and some minor scratches from falling into a four foot ditch with a barbed wire fence in it.
"We also need to thank the company BUFF who make head gear for cyclists, and Velocity Bikes in Fratton, who supplied us with energy drinks and gels which, although tasted nasty, helped us maintain fluids and energy throughout the ride."
PC Mark Gray and PC Steve Ryan raised around £450 for local Guides Scouts, Cubs and Brownies on the Charles Dickens East beat area. The officers were sponsored by colleagues in Portsmouth and ASDA at the Bridge Centre pledged £250.
