Detectives in Portsmouth appeal following three artifice incidents

Detectives are appealing for information following three artifice incidents in Portsmouth on Friday, June 19.

The first incident occurred at around 12.30pm when the 83-year-old man was at home at an address on Livingstone Road, Southsea.  Two men came to his front door and engaged the victim in conversation.  They offered to do work on the house, with specific reference to the chimney.  The victim declined and the men left.

At around dinner time, a 54-year-old woman was at home at an address on Kimbolton Road, Copnor, when two men came to her door.  They again offered to do some work on her house and chimney and told the woman that they were also carrying out some work on her neighbour's chimney.  However, the woman knew that her neighbours were not in, so knew this was not true.  She decline and the men left.

A short time later, two men went to the home of an 83-year-old woman on Copnor Road, Copnor and managed to talk their way into her home.  Once inside they offered to do some building work on the house and chimney and said they would need a £3,500 deposit to carry out the work.  The men left and said they would return later.  The woman took advice from some legitimate builders who were carrying out work on her neighbour's house and she was advised not pay the money and to call the police.

Officers have descriptions of the two men they would like to speak to.

Man one is described as:

* White
* Stocky build
* In his late 20s

The second man is described as:

* White
* In his 40s

Detective Inspector Nigel Oliver, said: "I am appealing for anyone with any information about these incidents, which we believe are linked, to come forward.

"I would advise members of the community to be vigilant when answering their doors to cold callers.  Always use a door chain when answering the door to strangers, ask for ID and source your own number from the company they are claiming to be from, and ring them to double check they are who they claim to be.

"Look out for your neighbours, especially if you have elderly or vulnerable people living near you.  If you see anything suspicious, call the police immediately."

Can you help?

 Anyone with information is asked to contact Fratton CID on 0845 045 45 45 or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111. Mini-Com users can call 01962 875000.
