Hospitals across the country are being affected by an outbreak of Norovirus (diarrhoea and vomiting). This outbreak is also affecting services and capacity at the John Radcliffe Hospital.
This type of virus is common in the winter, and spreads through the community. Because of this both patients and hospital staff are being affected.
The Trust has robust plans in place to help contain the virus and to make sure that the hospital runs as smoothly as possible. This includes closing wards to new admissions to limit the spread of the disease, and limiting the movement of patients and staff within those areas. Regular, additional cleaning will continue to take place.
We always advise anyone who is feeling unwell to try and avoid visiting hospital until they feel better, although we understand that this is not always possible.
We encourage visitors to use soap and water to wash hands, before and after visiting - alcohol gel is not as effective as soap and water for this particular bug.
NHS Choices: Norovirus
Tuesday 9 February 2010
7A (acute general medicine) is now open as normal.
6B & 6C (6B & 6C are medical short-stay wards) remain closed to new patient admissions.
Patients ready for discharge will be able to go home if they are well, but those leaving our hospital to continue their treatment elsewhere may need to stay a little longer to make sure they are not affected by the bug.
