The Learning team at Oxford Playhouse have been busy selecting Holiday Workshops to keep 8 to 16 year olds out of trouble and creative this half term. With a variety of fun and educational workshops from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2010, the Playhouse is definitely the place to be.
If you write poems or stories, spit rhymes, freestyle or rap and have something to say, then The Spoken Word Surgery on Monday 15 February is right up your street. Learn the tools of the trade from Steve Larkin, founder of the UK's largest Poetry Slam, Hammer and Tongue and International Slam Champion, as heard on BBC World Service and Radio 4. Funny and gritty, thoughtful and foul, Steve Larkin performs poems and songs and leads workshops and slams in nightclubs, pubs, carnivals, schools, prisons and other venues throughout the UK. The Spoken Word Surgery is specially created for ages 12 to 16.
Or why not try Creating a Character on Tuesday 16 February, for ages 12 to 15. Explore the range of techniques professional actors use to bring a character to life. What makes us interested in a character? How does an actor begin to create and sustain a character? Where does an actor start? This workshop will look at a variety of routes in which actors bring characters to life and take participants on an intriguing journey.
Create another world through drama and storytelling on Wednesday 17 February in Through the Looking Glass. Taking inspiration from a range of imaginative worlds from popular children's literature and film, you'll be stepping through the looking glass to create some new worlds of your own. Using theatre techniques, storytelling and games, this will be a fun, challenging and inspiring day for 8 to 12 year olds.
Up next is a two-day workshop from Thursday 18 to Friday 19 February that is perfect for budding comedians. Have you ever laughed so much that you spat your minestrone soup in the face of the poor old lady sitting opposite you in the café of Debenhams? No me neither! But wouldn't it be great if you had? Have you ever? Will explore the nuts and bolts of comedy. Ages 12 to 15 will have the opportunity to create crazy characters and write their very own comedy sketches. This workshop will be led by Mark Curtis, who returns to the Playhouse following sell-out Holiday Workshops A Man Who Walks into a Bar and Why is that so funny? last year.
Tickets for Holiday Workshops at Oxford Playhouse are available from the ticket office on 01865 305305 or book online at www.oxfordplayhouse.com.
