Want to take the plunge this summer? You could do better than the Mounts Baths in Northampton, which has been named as one of the best places to swim in the country.
In a guide published by the Independent last weekend, the Mounts comes in at number 23 - top of the list of indoor pools - of the country's best places to swim. It shares the top 50 with venues such as Lulworth Cove in Dorset, Bath's Thermae spa and the prestigious RAC Club in London.
The top 50 was compiled by a group of experts and enthusiasts that included Tristan Gooley who runs the School of Natural Navigation, Simon Murie, the founder of Swimtrek and Anne Adams-King, the director of English programmes at the Amateur Swimming Association.
They chose the Mounts as one of the few remaining Art Deco pools in the country.
The Mounts was opened in October 1936 at a cost of £52,000 and has been a firm favourite with local people for more than 70 years. It features a health suite as well as a pool - and that too is a fine example of art deco.
Generations of children have learned to swim at the Mounts and a teaching pool was added in 1973. The baths, which the Independent notes, was built on the site of Northampton's old prison.
Councillor Paul Varnsverry, Portfolio Holder for Leisure Services at Northampton Borough Council, said: "The Mounts baths has been at the heart of Northampton for generations and it's great that one of our landmarks is being recognised nationally in this way.
"I hope the article encourages even more local people to come along, get fit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Mounts."
