14 July saw the launch of Northampton's Community Toilet Scheme to improve the availability of toilets in the town centre for shoppers and visitors.

Under the scheme, local businesses like pubs, cafes and shops will be opening their loos to the public.

So far 13 businesses have joined the scheme along with a number of council-owned premises. All will display a sticker in their window to let the public know they are welcome to use their facilities during their opening hours. Stickers will highlight the facilities available, such as male, female, wheelchair accessible and baby changing facilities.

Posters and leaflets showing where the scheme operates and listing other public toilets in the town are available from council offices, shopping centre, car parks, the Tourist Information Centre, the town's museum and other key locations around the town.

Councillor Trini Crake, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for the town centre, said: "We want to provide shoppers and visitors with good quality toilets".

"It is a fantastic example of how local businesses are working with us to make Northampton a better place to live and visit. I would like to thank all the businesses that have come on board so far and look forward to working with many more."

By partnering the council in delivering the scheme, local businesses are helping to raise the town's image and attract potential new customers.

Steve Jones, manager of the Jesus Centre which is participating in the scheme, said: "We are happy to participate in the Community Toilet Scheme and make our facilities available to shoppers. We hope that users of the scheme will also appreciate our art deco building with its peaceful atmosphere, the community café and other activities on offer."
