Motorists who drive their vehicles illegally by not having tax or insurance have been warned to get some quickly or face having the police seize and crush them.
Officers from the dedicated Sutton neighbourhood team in St Helens were in the shopping centre car park in Four Acre Lane, Clock Face, yesterday (Thursday) to demonstrate just what will happen to the cars and motorbikes of those who break the law.
A Ford Escort, a Suzuki Swift an off-road motorbike and a scooter were crushed by an industrial-sized vehicle crusher after local police acted on residents' concerns about speeding motorists, abandoned cars and youths riding off-road motorbike and mini-motos in built-up areas.
Sergeant Andrew Rankine from the dedicated neighbourhood policing team for Sutton, said: "Today has been all about sending a clear message to those people who think they are above the law and can get away with not paying their car tax or insurance like the rest of us.
"This is illegal and, working with partner agencies like the DVLA, we are listening to the concerns of law-abiding residents and cracking down on these kinds of offences.
"Not only is driving without insurance or car tax highly irresponsible and illegal, it is often the case that criminals do not bother to insure or tax their cars so by seizing them and having them destroyed, we are letting them know that we will do all we can to disrupt their criminal activities."
If you want to report someone using their car illegally call Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6010 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
