Council warns of ‘silent killer’

Council warns of ‘silent killer’

LIVERPOOL is warning people of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning as the cold snap continues its hold.

The deadly gas currently claims around 30 lives and injures 200 every year in England and Wales - but is preventable.

Councillor Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool's executive member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: "With this prolonged period of cold weather, people may be tempted to leave their fire on for longer and that could increase the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning. I would urge everyone to stay safe and buy a carbon monoxide detector. No one wants to injure or lose a loved one to something that is preventable, so it is vital that we make sure as many people as possible are as aware of this deadly issue."

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas, the main sources of which are wrongly installed or poorly maintained and ventilated heating and cooking appliances such as gas fires, boilers, coal and solid fuel fires, portable gas appliances and room heaters.

Common signs and symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, tiredness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and vertigo. High levels of CO can lead to collapse or death.  Exposure to low levels over a period of time may result in symptoms which can be confused with those of flu and food poisoning.

Children, pregnant women and their babies, the elderly and those with cardiovascular disease are most at risk.

All the city's registered social landlords hold mandatory annual inspections and the city has gone to great lengths to ensure that every property is inspected. The city council's Health Homes Team can also assist people who think they may be affected by carbon monoxide poisoning. They can help work with utility companies and provide alternative cooking and heating sources.
