AN INNOVATIVE community funding scheme will let people decide on how £30,000 of public money should be spent.
On Saturday (20 February) people from the Alt Valley neighbourhood are being invited to Liverpool Town Hall to vote on projects which could best serve their community.
The ground-breaking event gives the public the chance to get ‘powered-up' with new technology - based on the hit ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire' TV show.
The ‘Participatory Budgeting' (PB) event will see community groups pitching for funding, with the audience voting for which ideas they like best. Using the ‘ask the audience'-style keypads, Alt Valley residents will decided how £30,000 should be spent on improving their area.
The results will be instantly projected onto a screen for everyone to see. At the end of the event the most popular proposals are given the cash.
The innovative way of residents making decisions on community funding was launched at a series of ward-based PB events in Alt Valley, where groups have bid for a share of up to £5,000. Alt Valley comprises Fazakerley, Warbreck, County, Clubmoor, Norris Green and Croxteth wards.
Councillor Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool's executive member for Safer, Stronger Communities said: "This is a great initiative as it puts local people firmly in the driving seat when it comes to deciding on how to improve their community. It means that people who may not feel comfortable speaking publicly can still have their say and it is very democratic.
"The council is determined to try these innovative ideas to get people involved in decision-making. We think it's only right that we trust local people with important decisions about what should get funded in their community."
Plans are in place to roll out participatory budgeting events across the city.
