Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a Samaritan

The Isle of Man branch is urging you to make a difference

07 September 2011- For immediate release -

Everyone has it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer. To touch another person's life when it really matters, either by giving them the space to talk through how they are feeling or by helping to keep the charity's branches running so the service can be offered by others.

The Isle of Man branch is making a plea to members of the local community, to sign up to support people who might not have anywhere else to turn. If you have just a few spare hours a week they would like to hear from you.

Based on Victoria Road, Douglas, the Isle of Man branch currently has 70 volunteers, but they are always looking to recruit more people to ensure they can continue to offer the service to the local community.

Samaritans offers round-the-clock emotional support for anyone feeling down, depressed, anxious or unhappy. The confidential service is offered by phone, email, text, letter and face-to-face.

Sylvia Hall, Branch Director, said: "There are a wide range of roles available to suit people with different skills - from taking calls to our helpline, to providing administrative and IT support or organising fundraising activities for the branch.
"By working together to support people struggling to cope, our branch is a rewarding place to spend your time, as not only do we offer expert training but there are plenty of social activities too!"

New volunteer, Adrian, said: "Choosing to volunteer with Samaritans was one of the best decisions I ever made. I received extensive training, ongoing support and really valued having a mentor to guide me.
It's an amazing opportunity for personal development and growth too, as, you discover things about yourself, as a Samaritan, that you weren't previously aware of".

Find out more at the Information Evening on Monday, 12th September, 7pm at St Andrew's Church Hall, Douglas (opp St Ninian's).

Volunteering for Samaritans may be right for you, why not listen to our podcast of volunteers talking about their experiences: http://www.samaritans.org/support_samaritans/volunteer/who_are_samaritans_volunteers.aspx

For interviews or more information about volunteering at the Isle of Man branch, please contact Adrian Christian, 334900, aschristian@manx.net

Anyone who wishes to talk in confidence to Samaritans should call 663399/08457 90 90 90, the branch helpline number or email jo@samaritans.org
