Description
University of Liverpool
In the first decade of the twentieth century art in Britain was going through many
interesting changes and experiments. The common image of Edwardian England is
that of elegant house parties in country houses in the paintings of John Singer
Sargent, but more advanced painters were showing an alternative view of society
and there were several different and sometimes competing movements all exploring
ways of representing the modern experience. This study day will look at the work of
Augustus John and this circle, based in Chelsea, and the Camden Town Group
representing music halls, north London bedsitters, the new suburbs and commuter
towns, but all painting in a lively and often colourful style. Both John and Sickert
were charismatic and important centres of their two circles but with different
attitudes to art and life.
