Meet our Community Champion Award Winners

Residents from the Manor Estate Residents Association (MERA) in Apsley have won Dacorum Borough Council's Community Champion Award for keeping their community clean, safe and green.

MERA was set up five years ago, and since then they've created many initiatives designed to instill civic pride in their neighbourhood.  These initiatives include regular litter picks, a swap shop of homegrown fruit and vegetables, and encouraging Neighbourhood Watch  Schemes. MERA also worked in partnership with Hemel in Transition to hold the first annual Apsley Green Fair in May, an event which
featured stalls, games and activities alongside information on reducing waste and cutting energy usage.

MERA communicate with their residents through a range of methods, including a dedicated website, regular newsletters, and two community noticeboards, and encourages the community to support one another and be good neighbours.

Presenting MERA with their trophy, Councillor Bert Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said "MERA is a  forward-thinking group of residents that practises good citizenship and instills civic pride in the community, empowering other residents to join their initiatives."

Beverley Schramm, Chair of MERA, said, "As an organisation, MERA works  to promote an active community which cares about its environment, and everyone pulls together to achieve this. We are immensely proud to  receive this recognition for what we do."

Highly Commended certificates were awarded to:

* The Noise Project, Markyate
* Colin Garrett, Berkhamsted
* Councillor Alex Bhinder's Grovehill Tidy Tigers, Hemel Hempstead.

All of the entries received were of a high quality, and the Council recognises the good work that's being done, and encourages everyone to  continue their valuable efforts to keep Dacorum clean, safe and green.
